May’s Essential Mix of TV, Movies, Music & Sport
5th May 2016
Take a look outside and one thing’s clear; we’re turning the corner into summer! If your next few months are full of holidays, lunchtimes in the park and weekend breaks to the beach, that doesn’t mean you have to miss out on a summer’s worth of great music, TV and sport – as Pete Dreyer from Vodafone explains in this week’s blog.
Your phone is the key to a world of top entertainment on the go, and having the likes of Sky Sports Mobile TV, Spotify and NOW TV Entertainment in your pocket means you need never miss out. Here’s what to look out for this month:
NOW TV Entertainment Pass
Like to keep up to date with the latest and greatest in TV? Then NOW TV is definitely the app for you. If you go with a NOW TV Entertainment pass when you pick up one of Vodafone’s Red Value Bundles, you’ll get live access to 11 top TV channels including Sky Atlantic, Sky Living, Sky1, MTV and FOX, as well as access to over 250 brilliant TV box sets.
Sky Atlantic is the place to be this month, as Paul Giamatti and Homeland’s Damian Lewis head to your screens in brand new drama ‘Billions’. Lewis plays benevolent but ruthless hedge fund manager Bobby Axelrod, whilst Giamatti’s Chuck Rhoades is a crusading financial federal prosecutor on his tail. Tune in on 12 May to see this potentially classic cat-and-mouse financial drama unfold.
And don’t forget that season six of Game of Thrones is well and truly underway. Still need to catch up? Seasons 1-5 are all available via NOW TV Box Sets, and you can tune into Sky Atlantic for the latest episodes of series six every week.
Music fans should mark 13th May in your calendars for the release of ‘Cloud Nine’, the new album from Norwegian producer Kygo. Since his breakthrough two years ago, 24-year-old Kygo has only gone from strength to strength – becoming one of Spotify’s most popular artists in the process – and producing music with the likes of Labrinth and Kodaline, as well as up and coming artists like Will Heard and Ella Henderson. Check out the latest single, ‘Raging’.
Elsewhere, there are big pop releases on the horizon, with Ariana Grande’s third album – ‘Dangerous Woman’ – arriving on 20th May, and Meghan Trainor releasing her new record ‘Thank You’ a week earlier on 13th May. Plus, if you’re after more of a throwback, American songstress Cyndi Lauper has dropped a new album! Jump onto Spotify to listen to ‘Detour’.
Have you had a look at Spotify Concerts yet? The Swedish streaming giant has teamed up with Songkick to keep you informed on all the latest gigs from your favourite artists. Not only that, but Concerts will suggest live gigs nearby with artists that it thinks you’ll like based on your music tastes! Head over to the ‘Browse’ tab and click on ‘Concerts’ to take a look.
Sky Sports Mobile TV
After some nail-biting football entertainment this week that shocked the nation, Leicester City have been crowned champions of the Premier League! But the action isn’t over yet. Manchester City vs. Arsenal takes place on 8th May, and Chelsea vs. Liverpool a few days later on 11th May. There’s also the drama of Football League Playoffs, which is live and exclusive on Sky Sports. Tune in from 28th-30th May to see the League Two, League One and Championship Playoff finals.
There’s plenty of action elsewhere, too. England’s cricketers have two tests to play against Sri Lanka before the Tri-Series tournament in June, with the first starting on 19th May.
Netflix is home to a massive catalogue of quality TV shows and movies, making it perfect for TV fanatics. Even more importantly, it’s the only place you can watch Netflix originals – a collection of award-winning shows that includes the likes of House of Cards and Orange is the New Black, as well as Netflix’s Marvel tie-ins like Marvel’s Daredevil and Marvel’s Jessica Jones.
May is a huge month for Netflix with loads of new shows arriving on the service. Light-hearted comedy drama Grace and Frankie returns for a second season on 6 May, and a new mockumentary – ‘Lady Dynamite’ – premieres on 20th May, following the life of comedian and actress Maria Bamford.
And perhaps the best news of all comes in the form of Bloodline season two, which arrives at the end of the month! Season one was incredibly well-received – go and watch it if you haven’t already – and starred Ben Mendelsohn as Danny Rayburn, the prodigal son of a Florida Keys family, whose return causes trouble amongst his parents and siblings. Dark, moody and suspenseful, Bloodline was one of last year’s biggest surprise packages, so tune in on 27th May and don’t miss out on the next chapter.
