Kidscan: Our Charity of the Year
19th October 2015
We were delighted to select Salford-based Kidscan as our very first Charity of the Year for 2015. Kidscan was selected from a shortlist of local charities thanks to its strong connections to Salford and its focus on improving health outcomes for children.
To date, we have hosted lots of events and initiatives where monies have been raised for the charity to help fund its vital research into gentler treatments for childhood cancer.
Kidscan Children’s Cancer Research was established in 2002 to specifically support research into new and improved treatments for children with cancer. Kidscan was the first charity of its kind. 1 in 500 children in the UK will be diagnosed with cancer before they are 14 years old. Tragically, 25% of these children won’t make it to their 30th birthday.
Cancer is the leading cause of death in children in the UK. Through groundbreaking research, Kidscan is striving to change that, giving every child with cancer the treatment they need to survive. By funding research into drug treatments and support programmes designed with children in mind, they are reducing both short and long term side effects of cancer in childhood. Their scientists are developing treatments which are less damaging to the bodies of children and young adults whilst retaining the effectiveness of many current treatments.
“We were thrilled to have been chosen as Salford Shopping Centre’s Charity of the Year. This partnership has brought huge benefits to us and we’ve been really excited to be working alongside the team. We’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone at the centre, this support will undoubtedly bring huge benefits to Kidscan in the longer term too.”
Lowri Haf Turner, Fundraising Manager at Kidscan
Kidscan receive no statutory funding. They rely entirely on contributions from the public, volunteers, businesses and funds generated through Kidscan events for their groundbreaking research to continue. With all of the funding for their vital research coming from donations, Kidscan is a hive of fundraising activity. If you’re interested in helping them raise money you can join in with challenge events, street collections, golf days and community events. You can also donate online at kidscan.org.uk.
“Salford Shopping Centre has never had a Charity of the Year before and we were really taken with the work that Kidscan does, and the enthusiasm and dedication of Lowri and her team. Their links to the Salford community were also an important factor for us and we’re very proud to be supporting them. We’re really looking forward to working with Kidscan in the future, and I hope that our support can help to make a real difference to them. We hope our shoppers will continue to show their support for this important local charity.”
